It is hard to believe that this is our last month this year. Our preschool year is winding down and many of our preschoolers will be off to kindergarten in the fall.

We thank you for entrusting your child to us this year. We have enjoyed working with all of the children in our care and have seen growth, development and skill acquisition in all of our preschoolers.

We have also witnessed how the children have grown in the way they deal with frustration and the care and concern they express for one another. Our preschoolers have made lifelong friends and connections with one another. We are really impressed with the extended attention spans of these little ones. Our circle times and instructional activities have really expanded as the kids are able to sit longer and listen. Hoorah for preschoolers!!! Please make note of the special events coming up. The end of the preschool year is special, whether it means coming to the end-of-year celebration or attending graduation.

In My Garden

This month your child will be participating in a variety of fun and educational activities and experiences as they learn all about gardens.

We will be digging in the dirt, planting seeds, celebrating National Bird Day & Kite day, making bird feeders, discussing Cinco De Mayo, making Mother’s Day Gifts, digging for worms, making bean gardens, observing the life cycle of a butterfly, and much more.

Please note the calendar concerning preschool graduation, end of the year celebration for 3’s, garden service day, and our last day of school.

Our 4’s classes will be visiting the Kindergarten classrooms on Wednesday, May 19th. The Kindergarten teachers have invited us to come and participate in an activity with them.

We currently have a waiting list for next year’s 4’s class and just a few more spots available for our 3’s class. If you are enrolled for next year and encounter any changes over the summer, please email right away so someone else may have your place.

Got Milk? Where did the milk come from? This month the preschoolers will learn the answer to this question and much more about life on a farm. We have a lot planned for the kids this month including a field trip to a local farm. The kids will participate in many “farm themed” educational based activities in the classroom. We will finish out the year with a market set up in our dramatic play area. The train center has been converted into a farm center. Dr. Miller (local dentist) has donated a large wooden barn with animals to our preschool.

This month the preschoolers will also make their own butter, have fun with western week, celebrate Earth Day, Easter Egg Hunt, and participate in National Library Day. Don’t be surprised if they come home chanting:
“Click-Clack Moo, Clickity-Clack Moo”.

We are also looking forward to one of our favorite books, “The Three Little Pigs”. Preschoolers love acting this one out.

Happy New Year! I hope you all enjoyed some time off to be with family and friends.

Thank you so much for giving us the privilege of working with your children. How lucky we are to be a part of their lives, and to watch them grow and develop into amazing little people.

As we start a new year at Learning for Life Preschool we are looking forward to some great discovery.

In January, we will learn all about penguins. The preschoolers will participate in many enrichment based activities including their first lapbook.

Gingerbread Baby

The Learning for Life Preschool is planning for a fun and eventful December.

We would like to wish everyone a Happy Holidays filled with family joy and cheer. It is our hope that love and kindness will fill our preschool as the kids participate in our preschool Christmas activities.

Christmas is a great opportunity to teach our children about friendship, love, service, and giving. It is also a time to celebrate the things that our important in our lives. As always we will not be discussing the religious aspects of Christmas.

Some of the fun filled activities we have planned this month include; decorating gingerbread men, hanging stockings, singing carols, silver & gold day, making ornaments, card making, Christmas projects, Holiday party/program, Gingerbread Baby play, and much more.

Canned Food Drive

In November, our preschoolers collected over 200 cans for Josephs Store House. Thank you so much for supporting this activity! The kids truly loved this and learned a great lesson in giving.

We are excited about this addition and are looking forward to many exciting things this year. September 14th is our first day of school.

Preschool Graduation

The Learning for Life Preschool is looking forward to celebrating our school year with a special preschool graduation.

It is scheduled for Wednesday June 3rd. This event will be held at Carlton Elementary School at 6:30 pm.

All preschoolers will participate in the graduation, not just the kids attending Kindergarten next year. It is a celebration of the many things we learned this year. The kids have been working hard on a little program to share with their parents. We hope to see you there!

In My Garden

In April, we had a lot of fun with this theme. I think the kids enjoyed digging in the dirt the most.

Some of our highlights include: Bunny Easter Egg Hunt, planting peas, worm discovery and making our worm farms, the garden wall mural, Earth Day Celebrations, recycling and litter patrol, Mr. Winky (our new class tortoise), baby chicks, making stepping stones for carnival, and much more.

The Learning for Life Preschool is grateful for the generous donations from Flavors of Carlton.

What a thrill to have so much community support!
Thank you!!

We received $6,800 in total donations.
Our preschool plans on using this money to further develop our discovery centers. This includes literacy tools, books, listening center, etc.

As our families have been affected by the economy, we would also like to provide scholarships to those in need.

Learning for Life strives to be available to all families. It is our goal to keep tuition costs low and we are always seeking resources for scholarships.

We will begin accepting preschool applications from our returning preschool families April 1st.

Attached to this newsletter is a “re-enrollment” form for those wishing to return to the Learning for Life Preschool next year. Please submit the form to a classroom teacher with your $50 non-refundable registration fee.

New families may begin registering May 1st.

Registration packets can be picked up at the preschool, CES office, and CTC.

The “new family” packets are available now, but will not be accepted until May 1st.

In My Garden

We will be holding a preschool Easter egg hunt, dying eggs, focusing on fundamentals, digging in the dirt and much more.

Little Gems Grocery Store

During our Gilbert House Field Trip, we discovered a very cool play grocery store. This was a popular spot for our preschoolers.
We would like to develop a grocery store of our own at preschool. We already have a play cash register, two shopping carts, and a few food items. We need your help in creating our pretend grocery items. Please save your empty cans, boxes, jars, etc...leaving the labels in place. We will use packing tape to reseal the containers to stock our grocery store.

I have included a picture above that will give you an idea of what we need to collect.

Love Our Pets

We had a blast in February learning all about pet care. The preschoolers enjoyed taking care of our guinea pigs.

The kids made their very own Vet Hospital in our dramatic play area. This was a popular place to play.

Dr. Tresa Apke came from the Carlton Vet Hospital. We dressed up like veterinarians and worked on stuffed animals. She taught us basic pet and brought her own dog in. The kids really enjoyed using the stethoscope and other special doctor tools.

Special thanks to Bryce, Dean, Garett, and Kaydence for bringing a special share this month.

We also had a visit from Officer Hoff & Police Dog Timmy. The kids had lots of questions for Officer Hoff about the important job of his police dog.

Flavors of Carlton

Flavors of Carlton is CTC's largest annual fundraiser.

Learning for Life Preschool has been selected to be the recipient of the annual paddle raise. This is very exciting!
With this donation, it is our goal to purchase educational materials for our literacy & writing centers. We would also like to provide scholarship to families in need.

The following is more information about this event.

Now in its 6th year, this annual benefit will be held Saturday March 7th at Ken Wright Cellars.

Tickets for this event can be purchased at the community center.

Please join us in making a difference in being able to provide much-needed social and civic services to families in the Carlton & Yamhill areas!

This event is offering guests the perfect combination of comfortable wine country elegance and romance, small-town hospitality, up-close access to chefs and winemakers, irresistible auction items and the chance to make a big difference… locally.

The event will celebrate art, music, food and wine to support Carlton Together Care’s vitally needed educational and enrichment programs for youth and teens in the greater Carlton area. Fifty area artists have donated paintings, sculpture, collage, watercolor and textiles for the live and silent auction.

Fairy Tales

This month our preschool will be focusing on two of our favorite fairy tales, Goldilocks and the Three Bears and The Three Little Pigs.

Fairy Tales help to spark imagination and curiosity. Fairy Tales usually have a moral that makes sense to preschoolers. Children love fairy tales because they are usually silly and bring to life animals and toys. And best of all, reading to young children encourages them to learn to read on their own.
The preschoolers will be spending lots of time this month talking about these fairy tales, acting them out, and using their creativity in lots of Fairy Tale projects and activities.

Dr Seuss Birthday Bash

Theodor Seuss Geisel was born on March 2nd, 1904. He wrote many, many children’s books. Dr. Seuss liked to use funny made up words and animals in his books like: Fiffer-feffer-feff, Zizzer-zazzer-zuzz, and Thin-a-mi-jegger.

Two of his most famous books are: The Cat in the Hat and Green Eggs and Ham. We will celebrate Dr. Seuss and his books on “Read Across America Day”. We will have this birthday bash the week of March 3rd-5th.

In addition to reading lots of Dr. Seuss books, we will be making hats, bowties, and getting our very own cat whiskers.

February Theme: “Love Our Pets”

This month your child will be participating in a variety of fun and educational activities as they learn about some different animals that make good pets and how to take care of them. There will be opportunities for preschoolers to share a pet from home. This could be a stuffed pet or live pet. Please schedule a time with the classroom teacher if you have a live pet from home you would like to assist your child in sharing.

Please choose from the following dates and times.

Valentines Day:

Valentine's Day is a special time for sharing friendship and love. We will celebrate friendship with a party for Valentine's Day. On the party day, the children will play some valentine games, make a special treat for snack and take home valentines. Please have your child bring a valentine for each member of their class. I have included a class list with this newsletter. This is a great opportunity for the older kids to practice writing their names by signing the cards. Start early, and have them sign one or two a day. The valentines go home in a valentine mailbox that each child will make at preschool.

Our Valentines Day party is Thursday, February 12th. Parents should plan to stay a few extra minutes at the start of preschool to help their child distribute the valentines into the mailboxes.

Mrs. Guinea: Classroom Pet

Mrs. Guinea will arrive in our classroom on Tuesday, February 3rd. It will be a great opportunity to teach the kids pet care first hand . Mrs. Guinea will need to exercise in her ball, be fed, and her cage will need weekly cleaning. The kids will take turns caring for her.

February Guests

We are in the process of scheduling a few special guest to our preschool this month. Office Hoff and his police dog will be coming to our school on Tuesday February 17th. They will teach us about dog care, dog training, and the important job of a police dog.

Mini Field Trip

The kids will have an opportunity to visit a farm in Carlton. Samantha’s family (afternoon class) has many pets out on their farm. Her family has offered us the chance to ride their pony and learn how to care for it. Parents are encouraged to attend this day for safety and travel purposes. If you cannot attend, we can make arrangements for your child to stay at preschool with a teacher or travel in a teacher’s car. Each parent will be required to sign a permission slip and liability waiver for their child. The law requires all children to be in carseats. Please discuss needed arrangements with your classroom teacher. We are in the process of securing a date for this. I will send out an email and flier when it is scheduled.

Class Sharing:

Thank you to Nora for organizing this program. You should have received a letter home explaining how our share time works. Each child is assigned a specific day of the week to share. The letter included some ideas of things to bring, as well as, the importance of participating in a preschool share time. Please help your child remember their share day.

Nursery Rhyme Time:

Mother Goose came to our preschool! (aka Miss Debbie) The kids learned all about Jack & Jill, Humpty Dumpty, Hickory Dickory, Hey Diddle Diddle, and many more of our favorite nursery rhymes. I recently attended a early child literacy training that emphasized the importance of teaching young children nursery rhymes. We have had great fun acting these out. One of our favorite activites was the search for Humpty Dumpty’s missing pieces. We had clues to find in the library, office, cafeteria, and in our reading buddies homeroom. The kids wore their crowns, dressed as the King’s men, and hunted down the pieces. We were able to put him back together again with the help of a few band aides.

Thank you to Hannah Hurty (pm class) and her sister Gracie (Mrs. Sisto’s class) for a great performance. During our week of Hey Diddle Diddle, these two girls came and played their fiddle. I also brought in my very old violin from childhood and the kids took turns playing it. We also jumped over the moon, laughed like dogs, and pretended to be the dish who ran away with the spoon.

We had so much fun with Mother Goose. The children brought home many projects to help them remember the nursery rhymes. We compiled a color book full of popular nursery rhymes. Each child should be bringing it home. Please take the time to continue reviewing these with your child.

Writing Center:

We have added a writing center to our discovery time. At this center the kids have an opportunity to explore different writing tools. The kids can write letters to friends, family, or work on writing their names. We have a classroom mail chart for delivering letters to friends in the classroom.

Reading Buddies:

We love Mrs. Fjellands 2nd graders! Every Wednesday their class comes to our class and reads to our preschoolers. Each child is paired up with a buddy. It is fun to watch the kids get very excited to see their new buddies. They love this.

Welcome Back!!

Thanks for your flexibility as our last week of school was cancelled. We got so much snow! Our family really enjoyed sledding, making snowmen, hot cocoa, and the extra time to play together. I hope everyone enjoyed the Holidays! I missed your kids….I’m excited to get back into our routine with preschool.

Extended Preschool Year

We have decided to extend our preschool year by one week to make up for our lost time in December. Our last day of preschool will now be June 4th. You will not owe any tuition in June. Your December payment will cover this week of school.

Early Literacy

Our goal is to develop a love of books in each child at our preschool. It is important to provide our children with the tools, resources, and skills needed to promote reading. We want to make this a positive experience for each child! Learning to read and write begins years before your child enters school. You are your child’s first--and most important--teacher. The time you spend talking to and reading with your child will help him or her get the best possible start and be ready to learn to read. It is important that your home has the tools needed to prepare your child.

I wanted to give you the link to the Y-C school district website that contains calendar information and other useful links and info. Our first day of preschool after the holidays will be Tuesday, January 6th.

The school district is part of an emergency alert system called flashalert. This will notify you of any school closures due to inclimate weather. It is a free service you can sign up for. Flashalert will send you an email or text message if your school district is closed or delayed. You will get this information immediately sent to your phone or computer as the superintendent reports it.

Preschool Canned Food Drive

In observance of our November theme "Thankfulness" we are conducting a food drive to benefit Joseph's Storehouse, a food bank located right here in Carlton. We will be explaining to the children that it is important to be thankful for the things they have, and that it is good to help others in our community who may not have the things they need. Please have your child bring in non-perishable food items beginning Thurs Nov 6. We will bring donations to circle time and talk about how the items may help a family in need (we might even get in a little chat about nutrition!). The kids will then drop their donations in the bin, which we will deliver to the food bank before Thanksgiving. Please consider having your child bring in items throughout the drive so that they can "donate" each day we get together and watch the pile grow! Our goal is to have 100 items for the food bank!

Heiser Family Pumpkin Patch

On October 14th, we traveled to Heiser Family Farms with Mrs. Johnson and her Kindergarten Class. The weather was perfect and the kids had a great time picking out pumpkins, petting animals, tractor riding and much more. This was the first time most of the kids rode on a big yellow school bus. They loved it!

Community Helpers

This month we have been learning all about our community helpers, including…librarian, police office, mailman, crossing guard, fireman, etc.

We set up a post office in the preschool for the kids. They have had fun taking turns dressing up like the mailman and delivering the mail. Throughout the day the kids can draw pictures, write letters to other members of the class. They can even purchase (with play money) a one cent stamp. This has been fun.

Next week, the real mailman is coming to preschool to get letters the kids will mail home. On the 21st the firemen will be coming to teach the kids about fire safety and allow them to sit up in the fire truck. The kids also spent sometime this month practicing street safety. We took them up to the crosswalk and the crossing guard showed them how to safely cross a street. The police officer is coming today to teach the kids some basic safety too. He is going to finger print the kids. It should be fun!

October Newsletter Items

We had a great first month of school. Each day gets better and better for our kids! Most kids need a few weeks to transition to a new schedule and preschool is a big change in their lives. As this is our first year, we are still working out some “kinks”. Thanks for your patience as we are all learning. I wanted to make you aware of some details for October.

Drop-off time:
Our teachers need every minute they get to set up class for the day. Please do not bring your child to preschool before the scheduled time. Morning class begins at 8:15 am and afternoon class begins at 12:15 pm. Carlton Elementary begins at 8:10 am. You may need to wait just a few minutes if you are dropping off older kids. If you need to make special arrangements with the teacher please talk with Lynn for the am class and Amber for the pm class. We can make exceptions for those that absolutely need it. Please be respectful of the teacher’s prep time.

Field Trip:
Our first field trip!! We are scheduled to go to Heiser Family Pumpkin Patch on October 14th. Both preschool classes and the kindergarten classes will be traveling together by bus. It will be a fun filled day! We will need lots of adult helpers. Siblings are welcome to come as long as we know ahead of time and plan for the additional people. The cost is $3.50 per child. Adults are free of charge and siblings will also cost the $3.50. The price includes a hayride, a pumpkin to take home, petting zoo, hay maze, and much more. You can check out their website for more information www.heiserfarms.com. All preschoolers will meet in the gym that day at 9:00 am. Make sure to dress for the weather and mud. See attached permission slip for more info.

Color Day Celebrations:
Each month we will designate a special color day. Please dress your child according to the color of the day. During circle time, your child will participate in a color fashion show with Miss Debby. In September we celebrated the color red. The kids painted with red, made red pasta necklaces and red apple art projects, read books about the color red. They also ate red Jell-O, apples and drank red juice. Look at the October calendar for black and orange day. It is a great way for the kids to have fun with colors!

Separation Anxiety:
In September, our preschool kids have been adjusting to a new school and being away from home for a few hours each week. If your child has a special blanket, stuffed animal, etc., they are welcome to bring it with them to school. We would ask that it stay in their backpack and used only as needed. It is sometimes helpful to have a little comfort from home. A few children have been bringing their “item” out during circle time, which is a quiet time to learn about the calendar, sing songs, and listen to a read aloud. If you think this may help your child, feel free to pack something for them. It has been very helpful for the children already doing this.

Halloween Party:
On October 30th we will have a classroom Halloween Party. The kids are welcome to bring a costume to change into. After snack time, we will help the children change into their costumes and participate in a costume parade upstairs in the school. It will be easiest if the costumes could be put on over the clothes they are wearing that day. You are welcome to come help your child change into their costume. The am group will change at 10:15 am and the afternoon group at 2:15 pm.

Fundamental Cards:
We sent home with each child a manila envelope filled with some flashcards. At the end of each month a new set of cards will come home to add to your collection. The cards will coordinate to the fundamentals that we learn about each month. This is a great way to reinforce learning at home.

Crosswalk Safety:
The first week of October we will be talking about street safety. The children will learn all about the crossing guard and will be make their own stop sign. We will take each class up to the crosswalk right in front of the school. The crossing guard will be there to teach the kids how to safely cross the street. We will then practice crossing the street safely with our crossing guard.

Open House

On Thursday, September 4th we will be having our preschool open house. Please sign up for a time slot that you can come with your child, tour the preschool, and meet the teacher. You can bring your school supplies in at this time or on the first day of school.

We will have a little scavenger hunt for you and your preschooler to participate in. It will lead you to find the cubbies, coat rack, discovery centers, bathroom, playground, etc. You will lead your child around in preparation for the first day of school.

We will also gather around our calendar corner for orientation and a brief story time. Let me know what time works for you.

Our Preschool Curriculum

The Learning for Life Preschool has adopted two curriculums and four educational beliefs. Our preschool day will be divided up into two educational styles with snacks, recess, calendar corner, and bathroom breaks in between.

The first portion of our preschool day will be devoted to the Creative Curriculum learning approach. Our classroom will be organized into “Discovery Centers”, which are areas with a collection of activities and materials. These materials are related by subject, purpose, or projected skills. These activities and materials are used independently by the children, or with teacher direction, to reinforce and/or enrich one or more skills or concepts. Discovery centers are an excellent way to individualize the curriculum to meet the varying needs of young children.

The second curriculum we would like to adopt is The Learning Box Curriculum. It is a professionally designed educational preschool curriculum filled with fun hands-on activities, arts and crafts, and early literacy experiences for children ages 3-5.

The Learning Box Curriculum was developed to ensure that children would be introduced to necessary skills and concepts in pre-writing, pre-reading, math, science, social studies, music, creative arts, health, etc in a fun and enjoyable way. This curriculum will be introduced by the teacher using a guided practice approach.

Learning for Life School Supply List

Backpack (your child will need to bring a backpack everyday to and from school)
4 glue sticks
1 pair of small scissors (blunt edge)
1 box of fine line markers
1 box of crayons (24 count)
1 box of Kleenex
1 bottle of hand soap with pump
1 container of Clorox wipes
1 box of Ziploc bags (gallon or quart size)
1 full set of extra clothing (please put this in a labeled Ziploc baggie)
1 extra snack to share (box of crackers, etc)

Each child will take turns bringing a snack to share. I will have a sign-up calendar for snacks days at our open house. The extra snack on the supply list will go in our cupboards as a back-up.

Please label only the backpack and extra clothing from the supply list. It is important to remember to write your child's name on coats, hats, gloves, etc.

Parent Participation Preschool

The Learning for Life Preschool will be a parent participation school. Some of the many benefits of the parent participation are:
• Lower preschool costs, making it more affordable.
• Higher adult/child ratio.
• Provides parents with a quality educational experience for their preschooler.
• Provides parents with the opportunity to increase their parenting skills and share information and experiences about child rearing with other like-minded parents.
• Parents are directly involved with their child's preschool experience and can make great school to home connections.

Family Choice

Your family has the choice to be a “parent/participant family” or a “non-participant family” based upon your child and your families needs. The responsibilities for a “parent/participant family” are as follows:

• A parent/guardian is required to participate in two to three duty days per month (2 days for the am session, 3 days for the pm session) for 3 hours each duty day assisting the teacher in the classroom. Duties in the classroom include helping the teacher set up activities for the day, facilitating the children's play, and cleaning up in preparation for the next day.
• To complete an Oregon Criminal History Background Check request. The results of the background check will be confidential, and will be handled on a case-by-case basis.
• To attend the Parent Participant Orientation Session at the beginning and middle of the school year. Any person who will parent help during the school year must attend the orientation session. Specific duty instructions will be given at this meeting.

Learning for Life Preschool

The Learning for Life Preschool is underway! It has been a busy summer getting everything organized and set up. We are so excited to open our doors on September 9th for our first day of school.

For years there was a preschool in place at Carlton Elementary. In 2001 it was lost due to budget restrictions. Parents, teachers and district administrators have all expressed interest in this endeavor.

May 16th, 2008- A survey was sent home with each student at Carlton Elementary School to evaluate the need for a preschool in Carlton. We immediately heard back from over 30 families in support of a preschool. At this time we knew Carlton needed a preschool.

June 16th- The Y-C school board unanimously accepted our preschool proposal. The school district is in full support of our preschool. They will be providing us with classroom space at Carlton Elementary School. In addition they are willing to provide us with costs associated with electricity, water, and custodial services.

The Carlton Preschool is a go!! We are excited for this positive contribution to the community of Carlton. The Learning For Life Preschool will open Fall of 2008.

We are in the beginning stages of organization; there is a lot to accomplish. The first steps are getting the word out, registration, and applying for grant dollars to cover start up costs.

June 16th- Y-C school board unanimously accepted our proposal in support of our preschool. The school district has donated a classroom at Carlton Elementary. They will also absorb soft costs associated with the preschool (electricity, water, janitorial services). We are so grateful for their support.

June 18th- Carlton Together Cares accepted our proposal to be our acting fiscal agent. This will enable our preschool to:

Be a non-profit organization, which allows us to apply for grant money
Allows contributions to be a tax write-off for contributors
Connects us to the greater community
Covers us under the CTC insurance policy
Acts as a support in helping us get started

General Preschool Information

The Learning for Life Preschool will be offering two preschool classes for 2008-2009. There will be a Tues/Thurs morning session held from 8:15 am –11:00 am for 3 year olds and a Tues/Wed/Thurs afternoon session held from 12:15 pm –3:00 pm for 4 yr olds. The preschool will follow the Y-C school district calendar. We have left Mondays and Fridays off of our preschool schedule. As a result, throughout our preschool year we will have very few days with no school!

Our preschool day will be 2.75 hours. For your convenience, we have taken into consideration the start and release schedule of Carlton Elementary School. We realize that many of our preschool children will have older siblings attending the school.

You will be happy to know that Carlton Elementary is willing to make special accommodations for your family this preschool year. In working with the school, we will do our best to coordinate your child’s schedule with a sibling’s schedule. For example, if you have a 3 year old preschooler, the school is flexible in the possibility of placing your kindergartner in the am class. Let us know what will work for your family. We would like to keep all 3 year olds in the am class and 4 year olds in the pm class.
